Key Steps You Can’t Miss:
Day-1 CPT Application Timeline
Applying Day-1 CPT too late can cost you time and work opportunities. Follow our recommended timeline to avoid delays and ensure a smooth and stress-free transition.
This step-by-step timeline helps you plan your Day-1 CPT application based on your current visa status. Whether you’re on OPT, preparing a Change of Status, or facing a SEVIS emergency, find the section that matches your situation:
For F-1 students with expiring OPT
Section 1: From OPT to Day-1 CPT
If your OPT is expiring soon and you want to keep working in the U.S., this section walks you through how to transfer to a Day-1 CPT program in time — school selection, SEVIS release, CPT start date, and everything you need to stay on track.
We recommend starting 1–2 months before your OPT end date. That gives you enough time to choose a school, prepare documents, and complete your SEVIS transfer before your current I-20 expires.
Step 1: Choose a Day-1 CPT School
1–2 months in advanceResearch program format, CPT policies, and requirements. We can recommend the best fit based on your situation.
Step 2: Get Admission Letter
~2 weeks to get the offerOnce you apply, most students receive their offer quickly — sometimes in just a few days.
Step 3: Transfer F-1 SEVIS
~15 days before OPT endsNotify your current school and provide your new Day-1 CPT school info so they can schedule the SEVIS release date.
Step 4: Apply for CPT Authorization
1–2 weeksSubmit your offer letter and course enrollment to request a CPT-authorized I-20 from your new school.
Step 5: Receive CPT I-20 and Start Working
Based on the CPT start date listed on your I-20In most cases, you’ll be able to use CPT starting on the first day of class. Some schools let you begin up to 30 days before your program starts.
Don’t forget: Don’t forget: you’ll need an admission letter and CPT I-20 in hand before your OPT runs out if you want to avoid a gap in work authorization.
For non–F-1 visa holders switching to Day-1 CPT
Section 2: Change of Status to F-1
If you’re currently on H-1B, H-4, B-2 or another visa and planning to switch to F-1 for a Day-1 CPT program, this section is for you. We walk through each step from school selection to filing Form I-539.
Changing status takes time. Start at least 1–2 months before your intended program start date, or earlier if possible.
Step 1: Take English Proficiency Test
~2 daysIf you hold a U.S. degree, you can skip this step. Otherwise, tests like Duolingo return results within 48 hours.
Step 2: Select Day-1 CPT School and Apply
1–2 months in advanceCheck if the school accepts Change of Status (CoS) students. Submit your application and receive an I-20 for CoS to F-1.
Step 3: File Form I-539 to Change Status
3–8 months (1 month with premium processing)After receiving your I-20, file Form I-539 to request a Change of Status to F-1. You may stay in the U.S. during the pending period.
Step 4: Apply for CPT and Start Working
~10 daysAfter CoS approval, submit your CPT documents and begin work on the listed start date once your CPT I-20 is issued.
Don’t forget: Change of Status ≠ Visa. Changing status to F-1 does not mean you have an F-1 visa. If you leave the U.S. during your program, you’ll need to apply for a visa stamp before reentry.
