Extend Your Day-1 CPT Program: Which Schools Are Flexible?
How long can you stay in a Day-1 CPT program? While most Day-1 CPT master’s programs take around two years to complete, some schools offer more flexibility in how quickly you finish your degree.
Some students want to complete their program faster, especially if they are trying to manage their full-time CPT usage and keep future OPT eligibility. Others may prefer a longer program to reduce their course load, balance work and school, or give themselves more time for future H-1B lottery opportunities.
In this guide, we’ll compare Day-1 CPT schools with flexible program lengths, explain how you may be able to shorten or extend your program, and help you understand which option may fit your timeline better.
How Long Is a Day-1 CPT Program?
Most Day-1 CPT master’s programs take around two years to complete, but the actual timeline varies by school, program, and course schedule. Some programs can be completed in as little as one year if you take more credits or continue taking classes during the summer. If you want a longer timeline, some master’s programs can be extended to 2.5 or even 3 years through semester breaks, additional concentrations, or dual-degree options.
Day-1 CPT doctoral programs usually take longer. Depending on the Day-1 CPT university and your course load, some programs may take around 3 to 5 years to complete.
💡 Pro Tip: A flexible program length does not mean you can delay graduation whenever you want. You still need to follow your school’s course requirements, enrollment policies, and maximum program length.
Should You Choose a Shorter or Longer Day-1 CPT Program?
If You Want to Keep Your OPT Eligibility
If you are planning to use full-timeCPT, how long you use it matters. Under current F-1 rules, using 12 months or more of full-time CPT makes you ineligible for OPT at the same educational level. Part-time CPT does not have the same 12-month limit for OPT eligibility.
For example, if you are completing a master’s degree and want to apply for OPT based on that degree after graduation, you may want to plan your program and CPT timeline carefully so that your total full-time CPT usage remains under 12 months.
This means you do not necessarily need to choose a shorter program just to preserve OPT. Depending on your school’s CPT policy and your work schedule, another option may be to use part-time CPT for part or all of your program while keeping your total full-time CPT usage under 12 months.

If You Want More Time for Future H-1B Lotteries
A longer Day-1 CPT program may give you more opportunities to participate in future H-1B registration cycles while you are still enrolled in school. Depending on your program’s start date and graduation timeline, extending a two-year program to 2.5 or 3 years could allow your academic timeline to cover an additional H-1B season.
You also do not necessarily need to stay in the program until the original graduation date if your immigration status changes. For example, if you are selected for H-1B and your H-1B change of status takes effect, you may be able to withdraw from your Day-1 CPT program instead of completing the extended timeline.
If you are selected for H-1B while attending a Day-1 CPT school, check out our guide on How to Leave a Day-1 CPT School After Your H-1B Is Approved to understand when and how to withdraw properly.
💡 Pro Tip: The timing of your Day-1 CPT withdrawal matters. You should not simply stop attending classes as soon as your H-1B petition is approved, especially if your H-1B status has not yet taken effect.
How Can You Extend a Day-1 CPT Program?
Not every Day-1 CPT program follows the same timeline. Depending on the Day-1 CPT school, you may have several ways to adjust how quickly you complete your degree.

Take a Semester Break
Some Day-1 CPT universities allow students to take a semester break after completing a certain number of consecutive terms. For example, you may be eligible for one semester off after completing three semesters in a row. Taking an approved break can extend your overall program timeline and give you a lighter schedule when work gets busy. At some Day-1 CPT schools, eligible students may also be able to continue CPT during the break.
If the break is optional, you may also choose to continue taking classes instead and finish your degree sooner.
Schools that currently offer this type of flexibility include:
Avila University Arizona
Students may take one semester off after completing three consecutive semesters. The standard program length is approximately 2 years. With an approved break, the timeline can extend to about 2.5 years.
Indiana Wesleyan University
Students may apply for a break after three consecutive semesters. Most master’s programs can be extended to around 28 months, while the MBA-IT program may allow up to two breaks and an I-20 timeline of up to 36 months.
Horizon University
After completing 3 consecutive semesters, students may apply for one semester off. CPT may continue during the break if all university requirements are met. The MBA consists of 7 semesters and can be completed in approximately 2 years. With an approved break, the program can be extended to approximately 2.5 years.
McDaniel College
Students may take one semester off during their program and continue CPT during the approved break. The standard MBA program length is approximately 2 years. With a semester break, the timeline can be extended to 2.5 years.
Westcliff University
After completing 3 consecutive semesters, students may take one semester off. CPT may continue during the break. With an approved break, students can extend the standard master’s program timeline beyond two years.
💡 Key Point: At several of these Day-1 CPT schools, CPT may continue during an approved break if you meet the school’s requirements. Always confirm your CPT eligibility with the university before taking a semester off.
Add Concentration
Another option, especially for MBA students, is to add a concentration to your degree. A concentration usually requires additional courses and credits, which can extend your program by one or more terms. For example, some universities offer concentrations in areas such as IT Management, Data Analytics, or Project Management, allowing you to add coursework that better matches your career while extending your study timeline.
If you do not need the additional concentration, you can follow the standard degree plan and graduate earlier.
Monroe University
Its MBA in Business Management, Analytics, and Information Technology typically takes around 2 years. Adding an additional concentration can extend the program to as long as 3 years.
Westcliff University
MBA students can choose from concentrations such as IT Management, Data Analytics, and Project Management. By adding a concentration, the master’s program timeline can be extended to approximately 28 months. The standard DBA timeline is approximately 3.5 years, with the option to extend it to approximately 4 years.
This option can be especially useful if the additional concentration also connects to your current job or future career plans.
Adjust Your Course Load
Some Day-1 CPT universities give students flexibility in how many credits they take each term. If you want to graduate sooner, you may be able to take additional courses or continue studying during the summer. If you prefer a more manageable schedule while working, you can follow the standard course plan.
The minimum and maximum number of credits you can take each term depends on the university and your F-1 enrollment requirements.
Trine University
It is one of the clearest examples. Depending on your intake and course schedule, a Trine University master’s program can take anywhere from around 1 year to 2.5 years. Students starting in Fall 1, Spring 1, or Summer may be able to complete certain master’s programs in as little as one year, while students starting in Fall 2 or Spring 2 may have a different course sequence. Students may also use the summer break or adjust their course load within the university’s requirements.
Trine University’s Doctor of Information Technology (DIT) offers an even wider range. Depending on course load and summer enrollment, the program may take approximately 2 to 5 years to complete.
Choose a Dual-Degree Option
Some Day-1 CPT universities also offer dual-degree programs that allow you to complete two related degrees by taking additional courses and credits. A dual degree usually takes longer than completing one master’s program, but it can make sense if the second degree also fits your academic or career goals.
Ottawa University
This Day-1 CPT school has graduate programs that typically take around 2 years, but eligible students may choose a dual-degree option that can extend the overall study timeline to approximately 3 years.
💡Pro Tip: A flexible program does not mean you can simply choose any graduation date. Schools offer flexibility through their academic structure, such as breaks, concentrations, course loads, or dual degrees. Any change to your timeline still needs to follow the university’s academic and F-1 requirements.
